  • Short Description

    The Center for Education and Lifelong Learning of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki welcomes you to the Thessaloniki International Media Summer Academy (Unveiling Tomorrow’s Media: Challenges and Tools in Communication), a 55-hour course via physical presence.

    THISAM 2024 offers a transformative learning experience, focusing on the challenges and prospects that arise from disruptive technologies and evolving societal norms within the media and communication industries. Participants will acquire essential skills and knowledge to excel in an innovation-led environment. The program not only provides 4 ECTS credits but also awards a Certificate of Training upon successful completion. Those who participate but do not meet completion criteria will receive a Certificate of Attendance. Join THISAM 2024 to propel your career in a dynamic and rapidly advancing field.

    The Director of the Programme is Nikolaos Panagiotou, Professor at School of Journalism & Mass Communications of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

    Teaching Staff
    Among the speakers who will be providing their knowledge and expertise are:

    • Nikolaos Panagiotou. Professor, School of Journalism and Mass Media Communication, Faculty of Economic and Political Sciences, Aristotle University and DAAD Scholar to Deutsche Welle.
      Nikos S. Panagiotou is Associate Professor, School of Journalism and Mass Media Communication, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He has been a DAAD Scholar at Deutsche Welle, Chevening Scholar of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office UK, RCAP Scholar from APU University Japan, Scholar to Beijing Foreign Studies University, Scholar at Sabanci University (Turkey), Scholar of the State of Luxembourg. He has an extensive research work which has been funded from Google (DNI Initiative fund). He is the initiator and organizer of Thessaloniki International Media Summer Academy and in charge of Digital Communication Network Global and Director of Peace Journalism Lab School of Journalism and Mass Media Communication, Aristotle University. He has a track record research and project work regarding disinformation, Fake News Hunters, Refugees against disinformation etc.
    • Christos Frangonikolopoulos. Professor of International Relations at the School of Journalism and Mass Communications, Aristotle University and Holder of the Jean Monnet Chair on European Integration Journalism. Christos Frangonikolopoulos is Professor of International Relations at the School of Journalism and Mass Communications, Aristotle University and holder of two Jean Monnet Chair on European Integration Journalism and on European Union Public Diplomacy. He is also the Head of the Faculty of the School of Journalism and Mass Communications of Aristotle University. He studied Politics and Government (BA Honors) and International Relations (PhD) at the University of Kent at Canterbury (England).
    • Christoph Schmidt. Professor of Media Management and Economics, Head of the Academic Department at Deutsche Welle Akademie. Prof. Dr. Schmidt studied Business Administration at the University of Siegen, Germany and received a post doctorate (PhD) from the University of Cologne. Prof. Dr. Schmidt worked for different companies as a Consultant and Manager. In 1995, he joined Deutsche Welle, where he held a series of managerial positions. Since 2006, Prof. Dr. Schmidt is Head of Administration and Head of the Academic Department at Deutsche Welle Akademie. Since 2000, he also teaches as a (Guest Lecturer at different universities in Germany and abroad. His main research projects focuses on International Media Systems and Human Resource Management. Prof. Schmidt teaches, amongst other topics, International Media Studies, General Media Economics, Business Management, Editorial Management, Project Management, Organization and Human Resource Management.
    • Sherri Hope Culver. Associate Professor, Klein College of Media and Communication, Temple University. Sherri Hope Culver serves as Director of the Center for Media and Information Literacy at Temple University, USA where she is an Associate Professor in the Klein College of Media and Communication. She teaches courses on the business of media and media management. Prior to her academic appointment, Sherri worked in the media industry for over twenty-five years as a producer and television executive. Her industry experience ranges from serving as a reporter for a public television news organization to writing and producing educational programs for young viewers. She currently produces and hosts the television series, “Media Inside Out”. Sherri is a three-term past president of the National Association for Media Literacy Education and a member of the steering committee for the North America chapter of GAPMIL. She regularly presents internationally on media literacy and children’s media topics. Sherri has authored and co-authored several books, including a chapter in the latest edition of “20 Questions about Youth and the Media” (2018).
    • Aphrodite Salas. Assistant Professor at Concordia University. Aphrodite Salas is a journalist and professor at Concordia University in Montreal, Canada. Her most recent work is a short documentary and multimedia collaboration with Canadian Television (CTV) called: “from shore to sky: a reconciliation story.” She is a trained workshop facilitator on issues of combating misinformation and disinformation in news through the international organization Journalists for Human Rights. Aphrodite is also a research associate at the Concordia University Acts of Listening Lab, a member of the national board of directors of the Canadian International Council and a regular member of the Concordia Centre for Broadcasting and Journalism Studies. Her experience as a journalist is extensive, having worked as a national reporter, video journalist and assignment editor at CTV, a senior anchor at Global Quebec and a Parliamentary Correspondent for CityTV Toronto and Vancouver.
  • Aim and objectives

    Each summer, THISAM brings together an impressive group of people passionate about journalism and its ability to influence positive change. Attendees include early career journalists, students, media entrepreneurs, scholars, leaders of NGO’s and media industry leaders. It is the interactive nature of THISAM that makes it such an exciting opportunity for attendees, especially students who come from around the world to attend. Throughout the week innovative ideas are shared and new business strategies developed. Mentoring and advising happens across career-level. The focus is on creating a hands-on, interactive, interdisciplinary experience.

  • Learning Outcomes

    Upon completion of the course, participants will:

    • Acquire in-depth knowledge and training on important topics and cutting-edge developments in Media,

    Communication and Journalism.

    • Be part of a major forum where current issues and research developments are presented and discussed by

    distinguished international scholars.

    • Gain access to an active international academic and practitioner community dedicated to innovative learning

    approaches.

    The program is addressed to students, researchers and professionals having the following background:

    • Bachelor/ Master students of Journalism, political science, international relations, etc.
    • PhD Students of Journalism, Political Science, International relations etc.
    • Professionals from media and other related organisations who need a deeper understanding on the issues to

    be addressed.

  • Selection criteria

    Application Form can submit those who have:

    • Relevant studies
    • Experience in the subject
    • Good knowledge of English language

    Preference will be given to candidates demonstrating exceptional expertise and qualifications in the above-mentioned areas.

  • Format

    THISAM lectures and workshops will take place in Thessaloniki. All participants must to have physical presence in the venue. All participants have to submit a number of group and individual projects.

  • Liabilities

    Obligations of Trainees:

    1. Participation in the programs of K.E.DI.BI.M. of the AUTH implies full acceptance of the program’s Study Guide and the Internal Regulation of Operation of the K.E.DI.BI.M. of the AUTH.
    2. The presence/attendance of trainees in the educational programmes is mandatory. In the programmes which are realized in physical presence, as in those implemented using the modern method of tele-education, the study is generally mandatory and the limit of absences cannot exceed 10% of the prescribed training hours. The monitoring of asynchronous education is implemented according to the study schedule set by each programme.
    3. For the successful completion of the programme, the participants should:
    4. not exceed 10% absences of the scheduled training hours
    5. have successfully submitted their projects
    6. have paid all the tuition fees by 25th of June 2024

    Rights of Trainees:

    1. Trainees are informed by the Department of Administrative Support of K.E.DI.BI.M. for all kinds of information related to the operation of the Centre.
    2. Trainees are supported electronically through the educational platform by the trainers, as part of the educational process, to resolve questions and provide clarifications related to the thematic units of the programme.
    3. Trainees have the right to apply for the interruption/termination of their programme attendance and a refund of their tuition fees, in accordance with the provisions of par. 12.9 hereof.
    4. Students’/Trainees’ work is protected under the Copyright Regulations/Provisions.
  • Certificate

    After successful completion of the program, participants receive a Certificate of General Training, which is issued by the Center for Education and Lifelong Learning of the AUTH and signed by the President of the Center.

    Participants, who have attended but not successfully completed the program, will be awarded a Certificate of Attendance.

PARTICIPATION COST

The tuition fee is set at 500 euros. To secure your spot, the participants should pay the initial installment of 30% by June 15, followed by the remaining 70% by June 25. Please note that the first installment is non-refundable in the event of withdrawal. Details regarding bank accounts for payment will be included in the acceptance email sent to participants.
